The Challenge

Managed SEO For priceline.com, one of the leading travel websites for booking hotels, flights, and rental cars. I was the SEO product head for growing priceline's organic traffic. Travel is a brutally competitive industry for SEO. The competition comes from hotels, OTA's, metasearch aggregators, and, more recently SEO's often fight for traffic with the search engines themself.

The Process

  • Role: Produce lead for SEO across four different verticles: Hotels, Flights, Rental cars, and Vacation packages
  • Developed & implemented numerous company-wide SEO Best Practices, including on-page developer code guidelines, copywriting guides, site architecture guidelines etc.
  • Developed a suite of core reporting metrics & ROI-based SEO forecasting model to measure the ultimate impact of SEO & prioritize opportunities that deliver maximum results. Whith this model we executed content strategy and page generation strategy to scale Priceline's organic presence.
  • Initiated & worked with our dev team to develop a massive crawler capable of crawling 15K urls/minute. Such crawlers are very important to begin SEO for massive sites like Priceline. (these days we have 3rd part crawlers like botify.com, but back then, we had none)
  • Developed a cost-effective internal rank tracker using AWR & proxy servers
  • Developed team quarterly roadmap to identify, accomplish & report on important SEO KPIs
  • Work with prospect & mobile teams to identify complimentary design changes improving conversions
  • Exclusive SEO support for single page web app built on angular.js
  • Eliminated outdated pages, sub-domain migration, canonical repairs, redirect manager etc

All these combinations of efforts resulted in massive SEO growth.

The Solution

  • 2013: Achieved 55%, 65% & 60% YOY growth for rental cars, hotels & flights respectively
  • 2014: Overall non-brand growth 14.7% YOY, hotels: 55%, flights: 50% & cars: 85%
  • 400% improvement in the number of pages indexed & crawled by Google searchbot
  • over 1M new landing pages we created for different flight routes using internal data.
